Here Are The Things You Need To Consider

Towbar Fitting Stockport Thinking of investing in a towbar?

At Northwest Towbars, we fit thousands of towbars every year, and due to the fact that there are many different reasons why people want to install a towbar we have come to realise that it is beneficial for our customers to be provided with some information before they make their final decision.

This article aims to enlighten the reader with all of the considerations of fitting a towbar in order that they can make an informed decision.

What Type of Towbar Do You Want?

Essentially there are three types of towbars that are typically fitted in the United Kingdom.

Flange Towbar

This type of towbar is permanently attached to your vehicle, and is probably the most common type of towbar fitted in the United Kingdom today. A further benefit that this type of towbar offers is that it is typically the cheapest towbar to fit. On the negative side, it is permanently visible and when reversing with nothing attached you need to remember the added length of the towbar.

Swan Neck

A swan neck is a very similar type of towbar to the flange mentioned above. It is permanently attached to your vehicle, but is more aesthetically appealing, as the name suggests, it has a curve similar to a swan's neck.

Detachable Towbar

The final type of towbar is known as a detachable towbar and is relatively self-explanatory in that it does not need to be permanently attached to your vehicle. You can add or remove it in a very short period of time, which is obviously convenient, but the main negative of this type of towbar is that it is slightly more expensive to purchase and install than either of the other types.

TowBar Wiring

The electrical aspect of your towbar fitting is equally as important as the type of towbar you choose, and is yet another reason why you should invest in professional towbar fitting from NorthWest Towbars.

The first thing to realise is that the type of electrics you will need will vary significantly depending on your requirements.

Towbar Towball and socket If you install a 7-pin system this is suitable for all types of towing, whether that includes a trailer, a horsebox, a boat or a trailer tent. However, if you intend to tow a caravan, you will need to invest in a twin electrical system, which would include an auxiliary socket. This provides you with the necessary electrical connection for a fridge and battery feeds.

From September 2008 all new caravans were fitted with a 13-pin plug and even certain cycle carriers require 13 pin socket. The good news is that here at North West Towbars all of our staff are fully conversant with the legislation and requirements for every type of trailer, which means that once you supply us with the relevant information, we will ensure that you have the right towbar and electrical system to meet your specific requirements.
