Towbar Fitting Cost
How much is it to install a towbar?
There are many factors that come together to determine the total price of a towbar fitting. Some of these include:
· The make and model of your vehicle (e.g. Audi, Ford, Renault etc.)
· The type of towbar that you prefer (e.g. Fixed or Detachable)
· The electrical kit that is compatible with your vehicle make and model (vehicle specific or universal. 7 or 13 pin)
· Accessories (extra number plate, tow ball cover, bumper protector, etc.)
The biggest element in your overall quote will be the make and model of your vehicle and the type of towbar you prefer: flange, swan neck or the more expensive detachable types.
The next important factor is the price of an electrical kit. Electrics are necessary to ensure you remain safely illuminated when towing. Although universal lighting kits are available, Northwest Towbars recommend you fit a vehicle-specific one. This ensures full compatibility and compliance with your car manufacturers warranty (and you won't even need to visit your vehicle dealership!)
The price of electrical kits can vary widely and do not necessarily correspond with what you would expect (e.g. a Land Rover Discovery electrical kit can be a lot less than kits from less expensive vehicles, bringing down the overall price of towbar fitting).
The accessories, if any, you need for your vehicle will depend on what purpose you intend to use it for. For example, if you are going to be taking bicycles, you will need a towbar mounted bike rack and possibly a lighting board and additional vehicle registration plate (which we can provide if you make sure you bring your V5 document).

Do you provide a mobile towbar service?
Although Northwest Tow Bars started off as a mobile towbar service, we no longer provide one. In 1995, we decided we could best serve our customers from a dedicated workshop. With a mobile towbar service, the quality of service can be affected by the weather. For example, heavy rain can make installing electrical kits very difficult. If you have any warranty issues sometimes it can be difficult to get a return visit from a mobile fitter.
Can I fit my own towbar?
While we would never dissuade a skilled, experienced and knowledgeable person from fitting their own towbar, we would normally recommend you save yourself the time and hassle by visiting us at Northwest Towbars.
Having said that, there is no cheaper way of fitting towbars than going down the DIY route. Good quality towbars are available for under £200 and if you can find a bargain on eBay or Gumtree you could find something cheaper still.
If you do decide to follow this route, please select from only quality parts and follow the fitting instructions to the letter. Taking short cuts and using sub standard towbars is not only potentially dangerous, it could mean your vehicle manufacturer warranty and even your insurance becomes invalid.
