Roof Box

There are a number of factors that will affect your decision when choosing a roof box:
Roof boxes are available in different colours, usually silver or black. Which would best suit your car?
Do you need to carry other items, such as a bike or kayak, on your roof bars at the same time as the box? If so you may need a 'sport' or narrow roof box.
Single or double side opening
Some roof boxes can be opened from both sides of the car, others only from one side.
If you choose a box that can only be opened from one side, check which side it opens from. Only on the drivers side is okay if you are loading the roof box on your drive, but if you are parked on a road it may be very inconvenient, possibly even hazardous, to load and unload from that side.
How high is your car? To get an idea of how easy or difficult it will be to fit a single side opening roof box to your roof bars, imagine washing the car. How easily can you reach beyond halfway across the roof? Now imagine the roof being 6 to 8 inches higher up (to allow for the roof bars and open box). You will have to reach at least two thirds of the way across to secure your roof box fixings. this can be quite challenging on a standard saloon, but for a 4x4 or MPV you may need to carry a set of steps in the boot. A roof box that opens from both sides will be far easier to fit and remove.
Budget
There is a wide variety of prices for roof boxes. As the price goes up, so do the features and ease of use. Single side opening progresses to double side opening. Basic 'U' bolt brackets, with nuts to be hand tightened, progress up through snap type of fasteners and on to advanced easy to use 'claw' fasteners for securing the box to the roof bars. Gloss black finish may be more expensive than matt grey and so on.
A basic roof box may take a few more minutes to fit, but it will still get all of your gear to your destination in safety.
